Angles Morts

for when the time comes

my cat died yesterday afternoon. it was a very sudden, immediate onset illness. i am still in shock about the horror of the thing, but i am also very glad i was still at home, because i was just about to leave to go swimming, and that eventuality would have been far, far worse. he spent his last day doing what he loved: laying in sunbeams, rolling in the dirt, eating cronchies. the cool hollow in the bush by our back door where he liked to hide out still shows the shape of him. he loved people, but he hated other cats. he was simultaneously very smart and very dumb. he was six years old, and was in our company for the last four years. in recent months he had taken to sleeping at night curled up by my chest, allowing me to cuddle him while i slept on my side, and it had been usual for us to wake up in this configuration. however this practice had been paused for the last few days on account of the heatwave, during which he preferred to sleep downstairs.
